Swipe Left or Swipe Right - UGA Undergraduate Admissions Swipe Left or Swipe Right? I will admit it, I have never used an online dating app. I am old. But there has always been one constant in the world of dating: Accentuate your strengths and de-emphasize your weaknesses. Athletic? Show some pictures of you competing on the court or hiking up a mountain. Brains? Highlight that amazing degree, the books you read and your passion for Shakespeare comedies. Sense of humor? Dazzle them with a few witty comments in your profile. And as for those weaknesses? Bury them. Bury them deep. By the time they get to know you, they will happily ignore obsession with the toilet paper having to go over instead of under, or your slight obsession with The Bachelor or Rick and Morty. The same thought process seems to holds true for students and parents posting college admission data on blogs, ChanceMe sites, and social media. Accentuate strengths and de-emphasize weaknesses. Have a strong GPA? Highlight the grades you made and the overall trends. Have a strong test score? Post the best SAT and ACT your child made, and emphasize how few make these scores nationwide. Active in School? List all the clubs, sports and volunteer work to far off lands. And if there are areas that are not so strong, then just leave off that part. The only difference is that while outside viewers only see the positives that are posted, Admissions Offices already have all the details on the students, and are able to see both the strengths and limitations of each applicant. This difference in the information is generally what causes so much confusion between the viewpoint online and the actual review and decision. Sometimes, data is just left out of the online post, such as lower test scores, C/D/F grades in the academic history, or a lack of academic rigor. In addition, sometimes the profile information does not always give the full information. Here are some common themes where an online profile does not always match the full details of the application: At times, the photo posted on a dating app might be several years old or have been re-touched in order to look a little better. Many times, a GPA posted on a forum is straight off the HS transcript, and could be very different from the UGA GPA we calculate. We have seen drastic differences in GPAs we calculated as compared to the one on a HS transcript, especially if the school uses an odd grading scale/system and includes non core work. If you have gone mountain biking twice in the last few years, listing it as one of your favorite activities is probably not a completely accurate picture of things. The same could be said for activities/clubs where you have only put in a limited amount of time and energy. There are more than a few students who suddenly become active in multiple new activities in 12th grade only, or list an activity which involved 3 hours of time for the year from 9th grade. We are looking at the depth and time commitment of your co-curricular involvement. The numbers given in certain things are not always the numbers that are most important. Yes, you might be 27 years old, but if you have the maturity level of a 14 year old like me, then this could be an issue when dating. Same with admissions numbers. Yes, you might have a 32 Composite ACT, but since UGA just looks at the ACT English and Math, that Composite data is suddenly not a relevant. The same goes with AP/IB/DE course numbers. If you took 6 AP classes but they were all in Social Studies, and if UGA is looking at the overall rigor in all five core areas, then that number is not always a good barometer of the challenge of your curriculum. In admissions, we are looking at more than the Tinder-like profile of an applicant. We look at everything in the file, warts and all. As such, decisions are not as simple as swiping left or right, but instead are full reviews of the entire application, as a brief profile never tells the whole story. The Trouble with Geniuses Part One: Although both Chris Langen and Robert Oppenheimer were both geniuses, Oppenheimer had better life chances and more opportunities than did Chris Langan. Oppenheimer was born in a wealthy and well-known family and was in an upper social class. Therefore he had a richer cultural capital than Chris Langan because his parents taught him how to deal with adults and how to assert himself. They also encouraged him to take chances. For instance, when he has an opportunity to be a speaker at the New York Mineralogical Club, he was afraid and did not want to do it, but his father encouraged him to take the challenge. Logan Leiter Mrs. Fiedler English 10. 1 12 October 2012 Ethan Frome: Fate No, I don’t believe Ethan, Zeena and Mattie deserve their fates. The actions of other characters led to their fates. For example, in the story Edith Wharton wrote this, â€Å"It was the fate she was forcing on Mattie – why not let her try it herself†¦ † (203). Since Mattie was employed to Zeena and Ethan, she could not have demanded to stay when she was sent away because they were hiring someone new. Mattie had no control over the situation, so she had no control over her fate. The only character who really had control over their situation would be Ethan. He never could find the courage to stand up to Zeena. He was angered, but chose not to express it to conceal his relationship with Mattie. Therefore, Mattie had no control over his decision which led to her fate. Zeena’s fate could have been changed multiple times in the book. Ethan could have ran off with Mattie and left the farm in Zeena’s hands with all the financial troubles along with it. However, Ethan’s conscience catches up with him before he could ever make his move. So Zeena’s fate was also influenced by another character. This forced-fate was a reoccurring theme throughout the book, it just hides in the text. That is why I believe the characters did not deserve their fate. Another example of fate being forced upon a character was when Ethan and Mattie made the decision to commit suicide. In the story, Edith Wharton wrote this, â€Å"Her sombre violence constrained him: she seemed the embodied instrument of fate. † (258). The book says Mattie constrained Ethan to join her on the sled. This led to his fate and he hardly had any control over his feelings for Mattie. However, something that I noticed while reading the novel was how none of the characters would stand up for themselves. Every situation they were put in, they had no affect on. They seemed cowardly and not willing to stand up for what they believed in. This pushed me in another direction to believe that every character deserved his or her fate. Ethan, throughout the whole book, would not follow his passions. Wharton wrote, â€Å"You can sell the farm and mill, and keep the money. His pen paused on the word†¦ † (201). Ethan was writing to Zeena, saying he was going to leave the farm in her care and try his luck West. But, he never really went along with it, he couldn’t ever pull himself up to execute his passion to run off with Mattie. Ultimately, I have mixed feelings over the topic about whether the characters deserve their fate or not. If I had to pick one it would be that no character deserves his or her fate because they had no control over them. I think Edith Wharton aims at teaching the reader a lesson about being in control of your own life. To not let others control your life and to be the pilot of your own life. Frome scrambled†¦ heavily booted foot† (pg 21), shows that it is extremely hard for him to make it through the snow, and him walking through the snow as a challenge is such a trivial thing, yet it brings a new character into the story by causing so many problems. He does many other   trivial things throughout the novel that are explained, such as doing mill work, scrubbing the floor and doing dishes. This shows the worst parts of life, and shown throughout the whole book to show the problems that Starkfield faces. Harshness of reality shows realism because of the problems Ethan end sup facing throughout the book. The winter is a problem that everyone faces, in each and every persons reality. This is unavoidable and just causes a hastle on Fromes life. Being married to Zeena is also another example of the harshness of reality, he has serious issues concerning Zeena and is unhappily married to her, yet he can do nothing to change what goes on in his life. Ethan says â€Å"he was seized with an unreasoning dread of being left alone on the farm; and before he knew what he was doing he had asked her to stay with him. He married Zeena for the sole reason of fearing being alone in winter and going crazy. Another is that he could not go to college because of his parents deaths. His mother and father both died while he was attending school and he was forced to come home and take over the family business and take care of the farm. It is unfortunate for Ethan because he was on the road to becoming great yet when his parents died he was forced to give up his dream. No free will also poses another issue in Frome’s life and portrays realism strongly in Ethan Frome. The fact that he can’t avoid his fate is a strong topic throughout the novel. He can’t leave the house and go with matt because he will not have enough money to take her anywhere. The narrator states â€Å"There was no way out – none. He was a prisoner for life, and now his one ray of light was to be extinguished†, and this makes him realize life can never be fixed and get better. And he also cannot stay at home, because he loves Mattie and not Zeena so he is stuck in a dilemma, and can’t avoid what was meant to be. Also his mother died in winter, which made him feel as if he would go crazy if he was stuck in the house alone all winter, which made him ask Zeena to stay with him even though he did not love her. This is just a reason of chance, and ended up being his fate. Also he tries to escape his fate, and die with Mattie but he is meant to drag on his life with Zeena for as long as possible. Ethan and Zeena’s marriage becomes bland and unappetizing to the both of them, and since the two are isolated from the rest of Starkfield, Ethan longs for social activity. However, this is the case until Zeena decides to appoint her cousin, Mattie Silver, to live at the Fromes’ farm with them and work as a housekeeper. Unlike Zeena, Mattie is is young, attractive, and has an interest in speaking to Ethan. Unfortunately, Mattie is inexperienced and has no knowledge of housekeeping and is naive. Upon Mattie’s arrival, Ethan is skeptical of the idea of having to pay for a housekeeper. Later, Ethan learns Mattie has came to live with the Fromes’ in order to feelings for Mattie (because she is livelier than Zeena) but is unable to fully pursue a relationship with her due to his marriage to Zeena because of his moral character. Mattie, who talks to Ethan and gives him the attention he yearns for, is the driving force behind Ethan’s new found happiness. Together, Mattie and Ethan enjoy conversing about Ethan’s lessons on science and technology which eventually leads to their outdoor walks and their discussions about their love for nature. Initially, Ethan is not physically having a relationship with Mattie due to his moral values, but envisioning one. Zeena, being an observant woman, realizes Ethan’s changes and behavior for example his interest in bettering his appearance, specifically for Mattie. Introduction Apartheid was a political principle that was adopted by the National Party administration of South Africa between 1948 and 1994. The blacks were forced into being refugees in their own country since their citizenship was nullified. They were forced to live in the ten tribally based autonomous motherlands referred to as Bantustans. Other races existed at the mercy of the white race. The white race involved the English speaking tribes and the Afrikaans. The government approved laws that could divide people based on their races. In 1950, the first law was enacted, which was referred to as the Population Registration Act. The law formalized ethnic classes and came up an identification certificate for each group (Pottinger 89). In 1950 still, the government approved another bill referred to as the Group Areas Act, which allotted each race a specific area. Before then, the government had passed a bill that criminalized marriage between different races. Socio-political and economic discrimination caused many problems in South Africa. In the judiciar y, only the white race was employed meaning that judicial rulings favored only whites. Other races could only vote for a white to represent them in the highest law-making organ that is, the parliament. Their work was founded on economic principles and supported by a regression analysis of empirical data on new drugs introduced from 1978 to 1987. Data on the new molecular entities that were introduced before 1984 were sourced from the Food and Drug Administration (1985), while the rest were from a study of drugs lags between the United States and the United Kingdom. The drugs used as part of the empirical data were subject to the FDA ratings, wherein Class A represented drugs that provided valuable therapeutic gain, Class B were drugs that were modestly effective, and Class C were drugs that gave little or no therapeutic benefits. : One of the main findings was the therapeutic significance of the pharmaceutical products was directly proportional to its launch price. In fact, Class A and B drugs were launched into the market at a premium while most of Class C drugs were at a discount. These findings satisfied previous research, such as Reekie’s (1978). According to Reekie, drugs that were therapeutically advanced were priced higher than substitutes already in the market while imitators cost cheaper. This pricing behavior has led Reekie to conclude that an even price competition in the market cannot be completely possible due to the presence of such advanced patented drugs. He observed, however, that through time, prices of these advanced drugs decline while those of generic or imitation drugs increased (Lu Comanor 108, 111). The empirical data also reveal, Class A drugs have the least imitators while Class C drugs have the most. But despite the production of these supposed imitators, the rate of imitation is not as rampant as those in other industries. In fact, branded rivals still thrive in the market and they cause the decline in the launch prices of fellow innovative drugs, whereas generic substitutes produce the opposite effect. This pricing behavior reflects the findings Dean’s (1969) study wherein he defines two (2) pricing techniques for new products, namely skimming and penetration pricing. Skimming pricing is positioning new advanced therapeutic products at premium prices that eventually decline, and penetration pricing is introducing less innovative products at lower prices and raising them over time. In essence, results of the study show that advanced therapeutic products enter the market under skimming pricing while imitation and other less innovative drugs do so under penetration pricing (Lu Comanor 108, 111). Aside from the pricing strategies, it was interesting to learn how the nature of the diseases also serves as price determinants for the drugs intended to treat them. According to the text, the repurchase or sustainability in demand for the drugs is, somehow determined by whether it is used for acute or chronic cases. So for drugs that are intended for chronic cases, such as those of the elderly, the strategy applied is more price-sensitive. This aspect of the pricing strategy is interesting in that aside from following the dynamics of price and demand, it benefits consumers that continuously need such therapeutic products for their health. While the text effectively incorporates economic principles with the technicalities of the pharmaceutical industry, the discussion on pricing would have been more substantial if the cost side of the products were also considered. As prices of drugs and other health instruments are often topics of debate, it would have been more interesting if the text broadened the discussion to include the price structure of the products and a forecast on the direction of the pharmaceutical industry during this time when the health crises is most prevalent.
